PRIMARY ENGLISH

Primary English or literacy, as it’s sometimes called, is made up of many aspects. You may find that your child may have difficulty or excels in one or just a few areas. These may include:

Writing
Reading
Phonics
Spelling
Grammar
Punctuation
Comprehension
Vocabulary
Handwriting

Sometimes just concentrating on one or two areas can lift the overall English level – as inevitably many aspects of English are inter-linked. English is such an important subject that poor English skills often affect a pupil’s performance in other school subjects. Maybe they can’t read a question in geography, maybe they can’t explain themselves clearly in a history essay or perhaps they’re unable to write-up a science experiment. In my experience as a teacher those children with strong English skills are often very good in other subjects. On the other hand maybe your child loves writing stories but wants to develop his or her creative ideas.

ENTRANCE
EXAMS
If you are hoping to send your child to a grammar or independent school then he or she may have to sit an entrance exam. It’s really important to remember that there is huge competition and that schools select pupils who display exceptional ability. I think it’s a good idea to be realistic and speak to your child’s current class teacher to find out how your child performs in class on a daily basis. If your child is identified as a ‘gifted and talented’ pupil then this is a good sign. Every school has a different selection process so it’s also worth contacting the grammar or independent school and/or visiting their website for further information.
Types tests involved may include:
* Verbal reasoning
* Non-verbal reasoning
* Numeracy
* English
* Creative writing
Entrance assessment days are often in July, September, December or January but check with each school to clarify dates. If you think your child may need some help preparing for one or more of the tests then get in touch in plenty of time. This is especially important with 11+ tests as children are unlikely to be familiar with the content and technique needed for this type of test. Book online here, selecting monthly, weekly or termly.
