Pancake Problems

Updated: Feb 15, 2021

Did you know that Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Tuesday? Do you like eating pancakes? Do you like making pancakes? Here is a recipe for making pancakes. They are very simple to make, but supposing you want to make more or less than 8 pancakes? You might have to problem solve... Try to solve the following maths problems involving this pancake recipe and pancake ingredients. These problems are suitable for primary-aged children especially pupils in lower key stage 2 (Year 3 and Year 4).

Pancake recipe ingredient list

(makes 8 pancakes)

100g (4oz) Plain flour

1 egg

300 ml (1/2 pint) milk

Problem 1:

I have half a dozen eggs that I'd like to use up on pancake day.

How much of each ingredient do I need? How many pancakes will my new recipe serve if I use half a dozen eggs?

Problem 2:

This time I want to make 40 pancakes.
List the quantity of each ingredient.

Can you solve both problems and explain how you have worked out the answers? Share them in the comments section. Once you have worked out the answers, visit the blog page 'Answers For Pancake Problems' to find out if your answers are correct. Even better still, why don't you make some pancakes as a reward?! Go on, you deserve it!
